Support Four Winds - Overview

peter and elena

Join Friends of Four Winds and help contribute to making fine music an integral part of our community. Friends of Four Winds involves our artists in community events, during the Festival itself and other events throughout the year. We believe that music and the artistic process contribute to a community's way of developing its identity, and facilitate ways in which people can imagine their future.

What has Friends achieved so far?

Num & ages of children to care

Here is our list of successes for the Festival in 2006, through the generous donations of the fifty-plus Friends who have joined since the inception of the Friends program in early 2005. We also have a donation from our first Friend from overseas – in France!

  • Hosting Sounds Amazing! – Forum with four composers, presented by Margaret Throsby. This was a free event in the Bermagui Community Hall on Easter Friday, 2006
  • Commissioning of an arrangement of Strauss's 'The Four Last Songs' for chamber ensemble performed at the Festival by soprano Kirsti Harms and the Four Winds Philharmonia
  • Sponsoring the attendance of composer Terry Riley from the USA.

What are the benefits of becoming a Friend?

Since launching Friends in 2005, we have hosted events in both Sydney and Melbourne – musical suppers in people's homes – at which both composers and musicians perform for, and converse with, Friends of Four Winds.

Friends of Four Winds event

At these wonderfully intimate events, Friends gained a special understanding of how fine music is developed. At the Sydney event in February 2005, held in the beauty of Peter Sculthorpe's house, composer Elena Kats-Chernin gave us a wonderful insight into the development of her works, from both the richness of her personal history and in response to everyday events. Elena then played some of her pieces with our 2006 Artistic Director Chris Latham.

Our Melbourne event in August 2005 again featured Elena and Chris, and Peter Sculthorpe giving us a rare insight into the final stages of his 16th string quartet, commissioned by Julian Burnside and developed on the theme of refugees and their treatment in Australia.

The key focus for us now is the Festival in Easter 2006, and you'll see the Composers' Forum – Sounds Amazing! - a free event sponsored by our Friends donations.

If you are interested in attending an intimate musical event and becoming a supporter of Four Winds Festival in this way, please join Friends of Four Winds now.
